Point Reyes
If you are lucky to have Point Reyes, make Point Reyes lucky to have you.
The Point Reyes Good Luck Fund’s mission is to preserve and steward the character, heritage, and community assets of the Greater Point Reyes and West Marin area for public benefit. We protect historically and culturally significant places, support community access, and provide essential services and relief to residents in need.
About Us
The Greater Point Reyes and West Marin area is a community with deep historical roots and a strong sense of place. As economic and demographic pressures increase, long-standing residents and community institutions face growing challenges related to housing stability, access to essential services, and the preservation of places that reflect the region’s shared history.
The Point Reyes Good Luck Fund was established to serve the public good by preserving historically and culturally significant community assets, expanding access to education about local history and culture, and supporting residents experiencing hardship throughout the Greater Point Reyes and West Marin area. Historic preservation, community education, and the provision of essential services are charitable activities that benefit the entire community and help prevent deterioration.
We carry out our work through charitable programs, partnerships with other nonprofit organizations and community initiatives, volunteer engagement, and the responsible stewardship of community assets. All activities are conducted for public benefit and in furtherance of our charitable mission.
What We Do
Preservation and Community Stewardship
We acquire, rehabilitate, and steward historically and architecturally significant buildings and sites that contribute to the identity and heritage of the Greater Point Reyes and West Marin area. Our preservation work prioritizes historical integrity, long-term public benefit, and continued community-serving use.
Rehabilitation and stewardship decisions may involve design, use, or operational constraints that are not commercially driven but are necessary to preserve historic character and community value. Preserved properties are subject to long-term protections designed to ensure continued public benefit and community access.
Where appropriate, preserved properties are shared with the public through community events, educational programming, and digital resources. We also document and interpret local history through written and photographic materials, making them publicly accessible.
Education and Community Engagement
Education is central to our work. We support programs that increase public understanding of local history, cultural heritage, and community resilience in the Greater Point Reyes and West Marin area. Educational activities may include public talks, workshops, exhibits, school partnerships, site-based programming, and community events designed to be accessible to residents and the general public.
Our educational efforts promote learning across generations and help ensure that the region’s history and cultural identity are preserved, understood, and shared.
Essential Services and Community Support
Access to essential services is critical for community wellbeing. In addition to preservation and education activities, we provide charitable relief and support to residents of the Greater Point Reyes and West Marin area experiencing hardship, either directly or in collaboration with aligned nonprofit and community initiatives.
When the local pharmacy serving Point Reyes residents faced closure after its operators lost licensure, we acted to preserve access to this essential service. We acquired the underlying property and partnered with Petaluma Health Center, a federally qualified health center (FQHC), to ensure medications and essential medical supplies remained available to the community. Many elderly residents in West Marin rely on this location for access to prescription medications and healthcare resources.
Affordable / Workforce Housing
Where appropriate and consistent with preservation requirements and local regulations, we may incorporate limited affordable or workforce housing into preserved properties within the Greater Point Reyes and West Marin area to support residents and prevent displacement. Any such housing is structured to serve low-income or otherwise vulnerable individuals or households and is subject to long-term affordability or use restrictions designed to ensure continued public benefit.
Familias Afectadas de Rancho (FAR)
Familias Afectadas de Rancho (FAR) is a community initiative supported by the Point Reyes Good Luck Fund to provide relief to ranch workers and families in the Greater Point Reyes and West Marin area who have experienced loss of employment, housing, and stability due to ranch closures.
Through administrative support and fiscal sponsorship, we ensure that funds raised for FAR are used exclusively for charitable purposes, including food assistance, housing support, emergency relief, and access to critical services. Assistance is provided based on demonstrated financial need using objective eligibility criteria, and distributions are documented to ensure accountability and compliance with charitable-use requirements.
